Trump Tightens Green Card Access to Keep Legal Immigrants Off the Dole

New immigration rules from the Trump administration would deny green cards to more people under an existing law designed to keep an immigrant from becoming a “public charge”. Critics say this proves that President Trump is not merely anti-illegal immigration, but anti-immigrant (and likely racist). At a time when America has more jobs than applicants, if Trump tightens green card access to keep legal immigrants off the dole, is he cutting off the best source of new labor and of future proud Americans?

I think the “spirit test” Bill would like to see, was the willingness of earlier immigrants to come to a place where there was no gov’t safety net, where they had no community at first, either. As the safety net has ballooned, we no longer see the risk takers in the front line of immigration, but those who know they will be supported if they fail. Add to that the drum beat of multiculturalism and being told they don’t need to learn English, or assimilate and you end up with problems. I lay a lot of it on the change in policies in the 60’s. Something else I really don’t understand, is that when my husband came in, I had to sponsor him, sign documents accepting financial responsibility and swear he would not use assistance. We have now done the same thing for my daughter in law. How is it people come in and don’t have to do that? My husband was about 8 years back and my DiL a couple of years ago: she’s just got her permanent residence. I’ve seen the pride of my husband receiving his citizenship, and hope to see my DiL get it too. But we’ve also been on the receiving end of anti immigrant sentiment: just last week my husband had a guy go at him, swearing and yelling and telling him to “Go back to where you came from”. (He’s from Scotland, the guy heard his accent) The husband’s response? “I’m an American. This is where I come from now.” (plus some choice swearing in scots.) My own family came over on the famine ships from Ireland. They mostly started in Philly and moved west. Within 10 years of arriving, my GG Grandfather volunteered at the relatively old age of 30 and fought for the Union. We ARE a nation of immigrants, but I’m not sure we are so much a nation of risk takers any more, or at least not so much. https://www.heritage.org/immigration/report/importing-poverty-immigration-and-poverty-the-united-states-book-charts

So, I am going to disagree with Bill’s conclusion this time. Here is a restatement of part of the discussion. There are 6 million open blue collar job in the US. Therefore we should bring in legal immigrants to fill them.
I would rather see us fill these jobs with 6 million people leaving failed urban centers (Baltimore, Detroit, etc.) and going to where the jobs are (OK, TX, NE, ND).
Comparing to 100 years ago as Bill did. My grandfather came here with essentially nothing in the 1920s, ended up owning his own business, put two daughters through college and I have a comparatively cushy life thanks to his efforts, my parents’ efforts and my own.
Someone living a subsistence existence in Baltimore can certainly pack a suitcase and get on a bus to where the jobs are. In the world of the internet, you should be able to line up interviews ahead of time.
There is opportunity for people to improve there living conditions, but it takes effort. I grew up in NYC suburbs. I moved 4 times for work before I settled in VA. Go where the work is.
Mike Rowe’s organization is trying to help with this.

I have been in the commercial/institutional/industrial roof industry for 40 years. I have done everything in the industry as a roofer, material sales, specification writer and consultant-proof of creds only.

Whether I am in Chicago where I live or any state around the country that I have worked in for extended periods of time; the roofing crews are almost exclusively “Spanish”. A high percentage of the crew do not speak or understand English. On one recent job, the Foreman had an interpreter so I could communicate. They are not just Mexican, they are Nicaraguan, Honduran, Venezuelan, El Salvadorean. I am paid to observe details and anomalies. I also know bad guys. I have seen neck tattoos on crew members, partially exposed while they are working. In the past two years, I have identified tats that are specific to MS.

If a Union is functional all those so-called “apprentices” must need docs, i.e., birth certs, Driver Licenses. Where do illegals/invaders get false or stolen ID…costs/ passable docs-$4k; good docs $8-10k. So where do all those “poor people” get that amount of American Currency? If anybody with a reasonable level of intelligence can’t figure out who owns these [currently] pawns; terrorist/guerillas [ when called upon]. I am not vilifying all, I am an only second-generation American born Citizen/Patriot.

Open borders and an unlimited welfare state is a short circuit to economic and social collapse. This country was founded upon self reliance, grew based upon self reliance, and is sustained by self reliance. Destroy that and the country will be destroyed.

The result of the destruction will be all enslaved to all with no one free. This is true even for the slave masters. The slave masters are as dependent upon slaves as much or more than the slaves are dependent upon the slave masters.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. There can be no such thing as a free lunch. In order to be able to consume there must be production. Someone must discover, design, build, make, and produce values necessary to sustain life before life can be sustained.

This is part of the fundamental nature of reality that cannot long be faked. The cost of trying to fake it is human sacrifice. It only appears to work as long as the fakers don’t run out of willing sacrificial victims. When the victims finally learn how to say no and make it stick, it ends.

Stop feeding them. Your life depends upon it.

Let’s see… They’re working but also collecting welfare, food stamps and ‘free’ healthcare. And that benefits the country how? If the job doesn’t pay enough to support an individual and their family, I’d rather see automation take care of the work they’re performing.
