I don’t think there is any chance of this happening now. Pence is showing his caliber in the daily CV briefings.
Mike Pence seems to have more presence than any recent VPOTUS…a quiet yet notable presence. He is a great wingman for DJT. I don’t see him ‘coveting’ the next higher office. I can see Nikki being appointed to a cabinet post…Secretary of State…? Setting her up for a run in 2024.

As usual Begala is projecting his own evil designs onto others, that’s the way he thinks. Before the Clintons did we, the political non professionals ,ever hear of spin, spin rooms , Friday night document dumps and all the other forms of lying that we now accept as normal? As far as the ‘botched’ Corona response that sounds like the plan has already been decided by the Dem/media journo-list group, what ever they call it now, no matter what happens they will refer to it as ‘botched’ forever, like Republican racism, Bush’s Katrina, Reagan senility etc, etc until the Lie becomes the accepted truth. Also I agree with Bill , dropping Pence will look mean, irrational and desperate, the worst of all worlds.
I’m not sure that Nikki Haley would accept the VP job even if she were offered it – which I don’t think will happen. I don’t think she likes Donald Trump much at all. Plus, Pence has been very loyal, as you’ve pointed out.
My recollection is that Nikki Haley is weak on illegal immigration. She made the statement “No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country”. I disagree 100%. If people are here illegally, not only should they feel unwelcome, they should be removed from the country as soon as possible. Since Reagan was fooled by the Democrats, no politician has done much of anything to stop illegal immigration. Obama’s “record number” of deportations is bull. He moved the goalposts to claim that record.
That sounds like a quote about legal immigration (especially since she put “abide by our laws” right in there).
Maybe I read too much into “is willing to”. If they come legally, her statement does not mean anything (i.e., they are already here legally). Since “no one” is mentioned, I would argue that this could be interpreted as unlimited immigration. I only want legal immigrants that will benefit this country as it is. I do not want any immigrants that want to change it to be more like what they left. If they like the country they left, they should have stayed there.
Haley would be a good follow-on candidate for 2024, as that’s where Republicans need to be looking long-term as a POTUS candidate, not as a VP. They need to be looking now for a strong candidate for after Trump leaves office.
I think much of this hype about coronavirus is media-driven felgercarb and probably deep state-directed, because they need to sew fear of a pandemic to drop the stock market and make it look like Trump’s economy is about to collapse. More people die from the flu in the US than from coronavirus and yet we are not fear-mongering over the flu. A lot more die from heart disease and we are not freaking out over food and lack of exercise. I refuse to be scared by coronavirus. It’s the same kind of thing we saw with Y2K and the 2012 Mayan end of the world panic, as well as with SARS and Ebola, which were all real things, but nothing at all equivalent to the fear the news media and pop culture generated for them, and none of them were world-ending events. The DS doesn’t have any other real backups now, so they fear-monger as that’s all they have; impeachment failed, Russia failed, Ukraine failed, so they focus the media on this “pandemic” that we will all forget by July. And I think Trump is aware of it and his administration will let the economy depress a little, just so he can boost it an even higher level once he counters. So saying he would put Pence in charge of handling a created “panick-demic” seems ludicrous to me. I think it more likely that if Biden gets the nomination he will still be in the crosshairs of the Giuliani/Durham investigation and he knows it won’t save him, so he will be a one-term president or, more likely, will suddenly develop some kind of mental or physical illness that requires him to step down so a bait-and-switch candidate can be put in, like Hillary or Michelle Obama. I don’t think that will win either, but we’ll have to keep putting up with this constant shuffling of options until election day. Meanwhile, I doubt Trump will pull a switcheroo; that’s more the Dem’s model.
This talk isn’t new, and Scott makes the best point at the end that quashes this theory – Donald Trump won’t bring in someone who steals his buzz. Pence is the perfect wingman for our president, and looking forward to voting for the Cruz/Haley ticket to extend the Trump legacy in 2024!
IMHO: the only way that Mike Pence is not the VP candidate is if something were to happen to him or he just decides to step down for whatever reasons. Trump takes care of and rewards loyalty and Pence has been a Labrador Retriever to Trump through everything that has been happening for the last 4 years.
