The Washington Post publishes documents released through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request about the U.S. war in Afghanistan, claiming they show that U.S. officials promoted a rosy view of progress, when behind the scenes they knew the war was unwinnable. Did the government really waste huge sums of money on an effort it knew was fatally flawed, while insiders acknowledged we don’t understand the local culture, and couldn’t distinguish good guys from bad guys.

Anyone care to say what a “win” would be?
Absent that definition any discussion is moronic.
I don’t know if it was winnable or not, but there are many countries in the world that will “Never” become Democratic (as a Republic or any form)…They are ancient tribes in conflict and will not likely change — will always be tribal conflicts and that is always a political dead end (dictatorship) — just sayin’
It comes down to the definition of what it meant to “win”. Unfortunately in our Politically Correct multi-cultural world “win” meant destroying the bad guys without altering the underlying culture and religion that created the bad guys. That is not possible so therefore the war can’t be won. If you want to truly win then bomb the mosques, outlaw Islam and send in Christian missionaries. Either that or just nuke the entire country and kill everyone.
“Enormous amounts of money”
Can you say Military Industrial Complex
Back in my tour guide days, when we got to the Vietnam Memorial I always mentioned that old line, “The South Vietnamese had no problem living through bullets, bombs, and napalm. But when the Communists came they fled for their lives”
For Dems, party politics IS the national interest. They needed Iraq to be the next Vietnam. Afghanistan is another story. I’m not sure it is winnable, but our current tactics guarantee that we won’t. I’ll be the first to admit that I have no military background, but I do know that you don’t win a war until you’ve destroyed enough of your enemy for the survivors to admit that they’ve lost. Pakistan & Iran have been what Cambodia was for the Viet Cong. Unless we’re willing to go into Iran & Pakistan to destroy our enemies we won’t win. Mind you, I’m not guaranteeing we would win if we did (and obviously sending our military into those countries would open other problems), but unless we do that we’ll never win. I’d be really interested to hear other opinions on my idea
