Just days after his acquittal on impeachment charges, President Donald Trump takes a literal victory lap for America as Air Force One roars over Daytona 500, and The Beast, his presidential limo, laps the track to the cheers of the NASCAR throng. This means something that the Twitterati and coastal elites can never understand.

This was just so great. A note about the Beast and the lap: Due to it’s weight and suspension, the Beast could not drive on the 31 degree turns at Daytona unless it went a whole lot faster — which it isn’t built to do. So they drove on the infield road that has a much smaller slope. If you look at some of the photos, the Beast’s suspension was challenged even on that flatter roadway. Nevertheless, it was an historic event that will be remembered not just by those in attendance, but by millions who watched on TV. Another well-timed and effective Trump moment.
The Beast should’ve done a burnout like the winner does at the end of the race, or maybe Trump is saving that for 2021 after he wins re-election!! (BTW, Bill, did you run out of hair gel or hair spray?!?)
A memory indelibly imprinted on my mind from the 80’s that is still with me is associated with being in Southern Utah just east of Lake Powell on a tenacious 4 wheel drive trail in the morning, when coming out of the east (out of the sun), three B-52’s passed over us low maybe 200 feet full throttle! First 2 passed, then the third followed up 20 seconds later. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING & POWERFUL DEMONSTRATIONS of our air power that I have ever witnessed. My family owned an airport as I grew up and I love aircraft! This was like a surreal dream for me. I remember the fuselages of the planes had a square marker painted on the side the height of the body of the plane and 15 or 20 feet in length. White and then orange on the first two planes, and the third was yellow. The exhaust pouring out of the engines, the roar, the power, and the skill flying at that speed and just off the deck! What a testament to the power, ingenuity and greatness of our country. Love America and our President!!!
We had two B-52 pilots from the old Blytheville Air Base that played on our Memphis club lacrosse team. They told me that heavy birds like ducks would punch holes in their wings when doing those high speed low altitude runs like you described.
When Scott said he didn’t think it was an in “in your face” move I thought “it was more of a Ra Ra instead of a Na Na”
To Bill’s close, we’re the people that took a taunting song the British played at our early defeats and used it as a victory song when we beat them. Yankee Doodle’s might be dandies, but they beat the best military in the world at the time, so mock us if you want, but you’ll do it from 2nd place.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit the EAA fly in at Oshkosh, WI a few times. Twice (maybe 4 times in total but 2 good shows) the F-22 Raptor was there and watching that bird come in low over the runway and then pull a 90 straight up until you cannot see it in the clouds, afterburners tearing a hole in the air you can’t hear your own heart is something else. Also saw a C-5 once and watching a cargo plane back up the runway under its own jet power, then reverse and take off in short-field style is somewhat understated until you think about dropping onto or getting off of the top of a mesa or some other tight location. It also did some evasive flying, yawing side to side as it crossed the spectator area and did a few other moves you wouldn’t expect from a big fat bodied bird.
You’re probably from Milwaukee area (I’m kind of originally from Wisconsin, but left it – but not my family – 30 ‘odd years ago).
My sister, who lives in Madison – MidWest’s Lib City – is promoting an effort to prevent F-35’s from coming to their air force base… because of the noise pollution, setting off people’s sensitivities (internal alarms).
I was visiting last summer when the subject came up – among her friends – and I piped up with my opinion that it was the ‘Sound of Freedom’. That didn’t go over too well…
I am between (somewhat) Milwaukee and Berkley East, the People’s Republic of Madison. There have been some reports of resistance claiming noise issues but at least one radio host has come out and said he thinks it is really just hate of the military.
Agreed, whole-heartedly…
Many, many years ago; Air Force Association Magazine published a cartoon showing a F-4 dancing around a B-52. The B-52 pilot said ‘ I can do something you can’t do”. The F-4 pilot watched & saw nothing had changed.
The F-4 pilot said ‘YOU DID NOTHING’!. The B-52 pilot said ‘I switched off two of my engines & I am waiting for you to top that!’
I heard a similar story, only the B-52 pilot told the F-4 pilot “I got up, went to the bathroom, and then got a cup of coffee and a sandwich. Let’s see you do that!”
Amazing.
Scott: Gymnastics is another one of those sports.
Juxtapose Daytona and Bloomberg’s “Farming” remarks. Sprinkle on a little Pelosi speech-tearing.
That’s a tasty recipe for November.
What about the Air Force One pilot that got to buzz the Daytona 500. Regular fans are now starting to post their videos of Trump’s visit, and it appears there is an airstrip next to the racetrack where Air Force One ultimately landed (along with the C-17 Globemaster carrying The Beast). When Trump got done with his Grand Marshall duties and his victory lap, he apparently went and got into Air Force One and took off with the crowd and announcers following the whole thing from the stands. I would say the fans got quite the airshow along with their race. They got two Thunderbird flyovers along with many take offs and landings, a C-17 Globemaster landing and taking off (I think perhaps there was a dearth of parking space at the airstrip.) and they got a Air Force One buzz, landing and takeoff along with a Beast victory lap. And the drivers and pit crews (etc.) got a ton of selfies.

He celebrates our team like nobody else, and our team is America!
Got to see a B-52 do a low flyover the Monday after an air show at Van Nuys. I’m driving home past the north side of the airport (more of an airfield really) and there’s this 52 lined up on the runway ready to go. And a bunch of folks in the field across the street. I immediantly pulled over and joined them. Once of them had a radio tuned into the tower. And we watched, from across a 4 lane street, as the Stratofort took off, did a long slow turn to the west and then come back and did a low flyover (just a few hundred feet) of us. It was great. If you want some kinda idea what it was like, go hang out at the In N Out Burger at LAX and watch the A380s pass over at just a couple hundred feet coming in for a landing.
Remember how the media bristled when Bush flew out to the carrier? That was great too.
And being a pilot he actually flew Navy One. Didn’t let him land it though cause… he’s Air Force.
Fly over in the AF-1 747 which announcers were saying was 800 feet above the track followed by some uplifting remarks made from pit row to the crowd of 100+ thousand fans, drivers, crews and track personnel, followed by a lap around the track in the presidential limo with SUV’s full of Secret Service Agents following. In my opinion you would have to be a very troubled individual to not have smiled and enjoyed the outstanding celebration of America. The fact that Trump (a 3 time attendee of the Daytona 500) did this at a NASCAR event is brilliant. From this type of display I have the feeling that Trump cares and is working hard for everybody. Word is the Secret Service had a great time as well.
Bush’s pitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAEXKwQ1f9M
Contrast with Obama’s pitch that even had Ricky Vaughn pointing and laughing at him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri8BOynRGnc
Didn’t down vote you, BB. That’s a down vote for that pitch. Yikes, that’s bad.
All good – Ricky Vaughn agrees with you!
