When I was 19 and struggling with college assignments I remember occasionally pondering the fact that my dad, at the same age, was piloting a Lancaster bomber on missions over Germany.
And mine was a motorcycle courier in Ireland, carrying secret packages from headquarters to ships on the coast, through blackouts (after having just avoided shipping out to North Africa where he would have been in Rommel’s massacre of American troops).
