Ave atque vale Mr Rogers

It’s odd how the death of a famous figure you can affect you. Maybe you’d not thought of them for years but the news that they’ve gone on brings them back to your mind and suddenly they swim into focus, bringing back memories and making you realise what impact they had on your life.

I had just that experience when I saw the news of the death of Kenny Rogers. Suddenly I was back as a ten year old kid in Southall, West London. Dad liked Country music after Sunday lunch, being a kid I claimed the task of putting the record on. He’d say if he was in the mood for Don Williams, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash or Kenny Rogers. I grew up listening to The Gambler and Coward of the County.

My usual night cap is a good Islay Malt, tonight I’m on Bourbon, toasting Mr Rogers.
