Darwin’s Demon: Tech Devolution Makes Your Grandchild Look Like ‘Mindy’

Will smartphones and other technology make your grandchild look like ‘Mindy’ — a tech-driven dsytopian vision of species devolution with a pronounced hunch, thickened skull, extra eyelid, ‘tech claw’ and other adaptations that conjure a creature which might be called Darwin’s demon. Some say Mindy already walks among us.

Outrageous! This is anti-evolution bigotry! How could it be that Mindy has been devolving since Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden and the effects of the curse were unleashed upon them and their progeny? After all, most people have put their faith in Darwinian evolution by suppressing the self-evident truth that Genesis is a book of myths, fables and fairy tales. Therefore, it’s a foregone conclusion that Mindy is still evolving.

Bill’s future reminded me of a book I read, oh, years ago by Isaac Asimov called “Foundation and Earth”. Some of you may recognize the series. This book combined two of Asimov’s ideas, namely the Foundation history and the robots of Caves of Steel. In it, the population of Earth had become completely infantile; nothing but parties and games and such. They were taken care of by a group of non-descript workers who turned out to be humanoid robots. Why did this idea come to mind? Because that is a distinctly possible result of this trend (not the robots, yet). We are creating a generation who cannot take care of themselves; look at the snowflakes graduating from college. Our best and brightest are becoming our weakest. There will have to be a group of people who support and care for these enfants terrible, taking the place of parents currently. Is this what we want?

Double bonus points for using enfants terribles. Thanks for a perfect image.

Somewhere something went wrong on the evolution chart… this isn’t the best picture I remember seeing but it has the end… a guy hunched over a computer.

One future tech I’ve read about is a computer screen the size of your eye glass lens and with two you could have a 3D image that while small, is close enough to your eye and in sharp enough detail you’ll be able to see clearly. The next will be tiny projectors shining in through your iris to create an image that appears 5 feet tall. Coupled with voice recognition or hand gestures you could control your portable communications computer without touching it or even taking it out of your pocket.

Evolution is a “millions of years” process. These physical trends are merely the result of current technology. They will change as technology continues to evolve (correlation intended).
