Gas Limits at the Pump

Last night I went to fill up the tank. I’m horrible about this chore and typically wait until I’m running on fumes (yes, I know about refilling at the half-tank mark – I just have a thing with this chore).

Anyway, I went to the same gas station I’ve been going to for the past year and when it got to $75, the pump stopped and the screen displayed, ‘Limit Reached’.

What limit? Did the credit card companies implement their climate change gas limit without sending out a notification?! That was my first thought anyway.

A friend of mine sent me a link to an article on the Financial Fuel Services website. For the average consumer, they will never see this limit. But for those with larger vehicles (e.g., trucks, SUVs, RVs, etc.), they might.

Supposedly, if you use a debit card w/PIN, you won’t come across the ‘Limit Reached’. That is,  of course, unless the gas station chooses to impose a limit. After checking with my bank and verifying no arbitrary limits were imposed on my account or debit card, that is what I suspect happened. Anyway, since this was the first time I’d ever seen this, I thought I’d share so you’re aware as well.

What You Need to Know about Credit Card Limits at Gas Pumps

Thanks for the ‘heads up’ on this. I don’t let my VEHICLE get below a half tank but … I often bring in cans to fill up for my generators, tractor and yard equipment and can easily get over 75 gallons and well beyond $75 to fill everything up.

BTW, if you fill up at half a tank it takes a lot less time to top off. I’m from a Northern Tier state and running on the bottom half can be fatal. Just sayin’.

I don’t know what it is about filling up that I hate so much. Must be a mental issue…

I think we all have things like that. I hate grocery shopping myself. Like I said, I’m originally from a northern tier State. We could get blizzards that block the roads for protracted periods and summer storms that knock out power for an uncomfortably long time. So I keep weeks (or months) of food supplies on hand but I absolutely hate grocery shopping and dread having to go to the store. Even though I know I ought to and ought do more often, I put it off as long as I can.

This was common during the $4/gallon days a few years ago. I loaded up the fam into the suburban hauling our 21′ boat and stopped to gas them both up. Hit the limit twice but it didn’t stop me from filling up.

It is my understanding [now] that you just simply end the sale and pump again. Since I hadn’t seen this before, I wasn’t aware. Thanks!
