Disney’s Mulan promises a live action version of its animated classic, but controversy erupts over the film credits which thank Communist Chinese authorities, including those in the city of Turpan, in Xinjiang. Turpan’s concentration camps and forced sterilization of Uyghur people conjures genocidal campaigns of the past, but at least Disneyland Shanghai doesn’t feel the pinch.
Has this latest expression of amoral corporate greed earned Disney the sardonic brands of Mouschwicz and Duckau?

Bill, Mary Sue is the perfect superhero for millennial women. She doesn’t have to work to achieve greatness, she’s entitled to it by her gender. She also doesn’t have to learn anything because being a woman makes her smarter than all the men around her. The world makes her a victim and she just needs to be herself to let her true hero out.
For additional humor at this Mulan disaster, both Pitch Meeting and Critical Drinker have Mulan episodes. I laughed hard at the Pitch Meeting one, and it’s only 5 minutes long.

The left destroys everything it touches, I’m a Disney stockholder and a DVC member, I love Disneyworld but the bastiches are breaking my heart, on the Lileks Bleat today people were discussing the Pinocchio scene in which he finds a place where everything is provided for him until he realizes he’s a slave and turning into a donkey(!)
I wonder if a historical analysis of the colonizing time period of China and Japan, with western influences and trade changing their culture and trying to measure how much their culture changed.
One thing I think, possibly falsely, of the asians in that area is their veneration of family and ancestors makes them more prone to the autocratic regimes that have led to so much misery. Would the Japanese have been so willing to die in WWII without their religious worship of the emperor? I imagine China now is more supported by the political systems already in place that squash and keep down revolt and with that many people you are more likely to find a quisling willing to spy and sell out his neighbor.
I wonder if the irony of Disney becoming an American stalwart by stealing the fables and myths of Europe (which, granted is where most of us came from and would claim as our own as well) losing its patina of Americana by dealing with a China that also steals western trade secrets and methods to become great itself.
So how do we turn this around against them?
I was thinking about a scene where the top 7 CCP officials are depicted as the 7 dwarfs and they go off singing “It’s off to Xinjiang we go…” and then they laud elements of reeducation, torture, etc. of their Muslim citizens, as applicable. Given the two parties involved, there would be little sympathy for ripping off Disney’s intellectual property [and it is absurd Disney has managed to legally retain ownership of that IP for 70+ year periods.]
On the other hand, if you follow Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch and other scholars and pundits and students of the Ideology of Islam, it may not make much difference if you are being indoctrinated into Islam or the CCP view of their world.

Wild Steve, I actually made a reference to Death Race 2000 over the weekend. I was in a NYC suburb at my brother’s home and I made the comment that what Andrew Cuomo did with senior citizen’s was the equivalent of euthanasia day at the nursing homes. My brother was of course the only person who got the film reference.
They get away with this propagandist crap because of subscription services like Disney+ continuing to generate operating capital. They are leeching off the franchise’s past successes.
Money talks. Don’t see the movie. Can’t believe they want to charge more for watching it on Disney.
