Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Tweets his own Ukraine peace plan. Does this prove that his genius has no limits, or that he could use some discretion as leader of a publicly-held company (Tesla). Does Twitter-fame lure him into opining on subjects outside of his domain?

Ok I know this is supposed to be serious but..
I could see Google and/or Facebook putting forth a counter proposal inspired by that one episode of Star Trek. All combatants would fight a simulated war, and casualties would be euthanized.
Trump proved it during his presidency that it takes a business man to run a country, not career politicians, and Elon Musk is a very successful business man. That’s why he got such an incredibly arrogant response to his idea.
They don’t want peace, they’re all making too much money from this F’d up war in Ukraine, where you can be on the payroll of a corrupt energy company just because your dad was V.P.
Problem with Ukraine is still one BIG thing. His name is Zelinsky. The comedian turned dictator. He really is no better than Putin. And he has lots of blood on his hands.
I was disappointed the crew did not recognize that Ukraine has essentially been a money laundering operation for many decades. Washington power magnates use it as their way of stockpiling their retirement funds in The Caymans. And that has to be stopped. Reports indicate that only 30% of the aid we send actually hits the ground there. The other 70% is properly laundered, and returned to bank accounts. This sort of activity will continue as long as we allow our politicians and other worldwide to use this country and its people as their personal enrichment zone.
I don’t think any corruption factors into the war. Are you saying that Russia would not have invaded if we were not laundering money there? Would we not have sold arms to them without the laundering? I would suggest that both would have happened. Russia doesn’t care how we make money and while you might make the argument that selling arms is a great way to make money, I would also hope that the US government and those of the western EU would not want
RussiaPutin to get in his mind that he can be Hitler all over again because the west is weak and won’t fight back.Sure, we’re spending a lot of money on things that aren’t directly in the US interest and when we really need to spend money on things here at home, like veteran medical needs. However I would counter that we do have money for domestic things if we did not waste it on all sorts of other crap that makes for nice headlines but doesn’t do any good. We also have a moral requirement to help those that cannot help themselves. The Europeans are failing this (and Trump called them out on it) by not spending money even on themselves, much less helping others.
We need to be that Uncle Sam, walking softly, not interfering in countries more than we absolutely have to (and maybe should be in Mexico a little more than we are, what with the drugs pouring north) but we need to wield that big stick from time to time, otherwise people will forget that we have it, and 12-7 or 9-11 kind of events happen and we have to swing the stick a lot more than we wanted.
If Putin had taken Kiev it would quickly have become a Russian majority city. Half had already fled, some would be killed, some would be deported to Siberia, and many, mostly the old, would simply change their name to the Russian pronunciation and give out pan cakes, bread and salt to the Russians. That’s’ how ethnic cleansing works.
Crimea’s addition to the Soviet Republic of Ukraine was not a mistake. The Soviet Union made a cunning maneuver of turning parts of Russia proper and Russian conquests in to “independent” Republics. It turned one nation in the UN into 12. In that process making Crimea, where the party partied, part of Ukraine made its state hood viable. Khrushchev was no fool.
The Queen of England countered creating the commonwealth structure. That turned the British empire into a dozen constitutional monarchies with her at the head of all of them. Parliament was initially confused. It rebalanced the UN with many new nations that Moscow did not control.
The Russian majorities in Crimea and the Donbass is the product of 100 years of ethnic cleansing. Jews, Muslim Tartars and Turks, non Slaves, and recently the Azov Greeks have been exiled to the west, the Urals and Siberia, or just killed. No election can resolve the problem of the region because no election can reverse the ethnic cleansing. Ask the Greeks that came from western Turkey. That’s half the global Greek population.
Tucker Carlson, Steven K Bannon and pollster Rich Baris are taking a strong Pro-Putin and anti Zelenskyy line on their sites. That has split Maga but it my be intentional Trump tactics. Its keeps Russian generals from agreeing with Putin and nuking something.
The other thing stopping the nukes is the prevailing winds; north west into Russia. Its a good bet that Russians have checked their stores of NBC gear and found it has been sold on e-bay if it works at all. Survivalist sites have been selling Russian suits and masks for 30 years.
Elon Musk’s Tweet may go down in history as a brilliant piece of diplomatic maneuvering. It will not sway Putin or Zelenskyy but tens of thousands of Russian soldiers will see it and think its reasonable as it gets colder. Because both sides are attacking Musk, its NOT getting censored!
Russians are retreating. Yes Putin’s reportedly made threats against soldiers surrendering and retreating but that will, has reportedly, gotten blocking units and officers killed. It did not work for Stalin either. Its a fast way to get a pro-Putin political officer shot by his own men or sleeping on a grenade.
The Ukrainian’s have increasing supply, advanced gear, mobility in snow and mud. The mud and Winter will not slow them. They have a range advantage. Most Russian weapons have a max range of 1.8 km (1.11 miles). The Stugna ATGM has a range of 2 to 3 km (1.2 – 1.8 mi). Their artillery with drone recon is 30-40 km (18 – 24 mi). The drone bombers a range of 40 km to 60 km (24 – 37 mi) Himars 92 km (57 mi). They are making cruise missiles that can reach all of Crimea and even Moscow. That range and mobility advantage means the Russians can’t regroup or maintain supply.
The tweet is being read by the Russian generals & admirals. They have already said no to Putin, a mere politician, on nuclear attacks. There are safeguards that protect them from both Putin and the Duma. Apparent division in the west is sometimes useful.
Lastly, does anyone trust the UN to run an election?
Going to disagree with Bill on a semantic level.
If I were President of Ukraine, my response to Musk’s proposal would have channeled a great American leader from WWII and then another from the end of the Cold War.
To this proposal my response is. . .
“Nuts!”
Here is my proposal.
“We Win, You Lose”
I have great hope that almost all on this site will get both references.
The problem with you guys saying that Ukraine should give up Crimea is that to the Ukrainian people this war started in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and they’ve been fighting it ever since. To them giving up Crimea would be surrendering to Russia, so they’re not going to do it.
And of course any Ukrainian politician knows that if they do give up Crimea the people are going to run them out of the country on a rail, and their successor will get into power on a platform of doing it to them. That’s just the simple fact of the matter.
The only peace proposal that I’ve seen that the Ukrainians will accept is a return to the 2013 and prior borders, and a return of all the people Russia has been kidnapping and dragging off to the Russian interior. That’s the only way they want to end this war, and they aren’t particularly interested in how hard this makes things for people in other countries that want gas or grain.
give up NOTHING/Crimea!! I was iIN Yalta the day putin invaded and everything he said was a lie.
I see an issue as how Putin saves face with his people after losing 60,000 people in this fiasco which he started.
putin pulls out all troops, which includes Crimea, and declares victory with the denazification of Ukraine.
I had a visceral reaction to Scott saying that Musk should basically keep his mouth shut. (My problem, not yours.) (And I’m happily married for decades.) Musk is essentially right in addressing the proposed reasons for the conflict and the impediments to resolution. Why shouldn’t somebody that people actually listen to at least put the cards on the table?
Agreed. And Musk just accomplished something far more significant based on teh reactions to his proposal: No parties involved actually want peace. At least not yet.
Unfortunately you are right- especially the US, as they continue to use the money laundering facility that Zelinsky provides.
After all Musk did for the Ukraine….by putting satellites up so those people could communicate, I do believe he deserved more than a short vulgar response. The ingratitude! All Zel had to do was say…Thanks, we will look into it. Gracious. Not to mention, as a major taxpayer, Musk has a right to offer a solution to their war that WE, the USA people, are mostly funding. We all have that right. My opinion of Zel has diminished.
It is best not to aggravate Musk. Some low-grade, unelected goofball here in California did that during the lockdown (it was about closing and opening of his facility, affecting over 1,000 employees.) Musk asked for consideration to keep his people working. The degenerate answered the request with a text, F Elon Musk. Graciously, Musk replied….Message received. And then he moved his multimillion dollar enterprise to Texas. CA lost the tax benefit. Do not upset Elon. He has bundles of FU $$.
Love it. Bundles of FU $$. Perfectly posited.
Funny how none of us has any trouble giving our opinions.
