Right Angle: Backstage (03-17-2020)

Bill Whittle, Scott Ott, and Stephen Green, picked the wrong week to give up sniffing glue. But neither COVID-19, nor sleet, nor gloom of night, shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

Thank you, dear Member, for funding this insanity…I mean, common sense conservatism.

I have to push back on the homeschool issue a little bit, Bill. Kids will not be homeschooled for the next few months, they will be doing their schoolwork online at home. There is a difference. Parents will not have to develop their own curriculum and teach their kids themselves, because the school will still be doing that remotely. Regardless, I hope you are right that this will do some good for homeschooling by giving parents a close-up glimpse of their children’s education.

“Giving parents a close-up glimpse of their children’s education” is (I hope) going to provide a shock to a lot of parents. I think they’re going to be appalled not only by the political agenda of the curriculum, but by the dumbing down of the curriculum since they were in school. And I hope that Bill is right and a lot of people are going to realize that government-run schools do not always have their childrens’ best interests in focus.

After the discussion about models and the Star Wars quote I kinda want to take a picture and post it of my Slave I model (Boba Fett’s ship from ESB and Jedi). I think I was 14 or 15 when I put it together and painted it, but I’m not sure if I still have the Blue Ribbon and State Fair ribbon I received for it. It still is on the shelf while most of my other models have been mothballed and stored or broken by the cat thinking they were toys.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was the only one who stopped R/A and spent time looking at it.

The main free market solution for something unpredictable like the pandemic or the supply chain problems is the futures markets. Those that guessed early that there might be a problem shorted the right markets and made a lot of money. Futures are also designed to signal a problem before other things but Wall Street has become so short sighted that they ignored the signals or blamed Trump for them. We will see changes to how the markets report so it does not happen again.

I would also expect someone to create a disease reporting system similar to wikileaks designed to bypass the Chinese fire wall early, leaving no trail. There are also similar censored internet systems in Iran, Burma and North Korea with the North Korean one being built by google employees under Eric Schmidt at the request of John Brennan, Barack Obama & Bill Clinton. Eric Schidt quit the day that went public.

My brother worked from home before the crisis. He does school staff pay for a whole state. They built a big computer rig for the job. The government switched to putting everyone in the department on working at home. Now my brother’s on the phone debugging other staffs work from home rig.
Schools have not been shut down yet in Australia so he still has work to do. I’m expecting school shut downs next week.

Drugs from China was not a shock for Trump, Robert Lighthizer and particularly Steven K Bannon. Bannon was talking about the virus two days before the first public announcement.

“…for every two dead Italians, there’s three dead Chinese…”

…that the garbage regime of the Chinese garbage government will publicly admit to.

(If you found out that the Chinese body count was really 10x higher, would you be in the least surprised?)

I like to use Loctite super glue — I do quite a bit of model work with Legos, and it’s great for the weak spots.

Bill, you would love the custom model I made for my girlfriend for Christmas two years ago. She was a naval flight officer, so I made her a copy of her actual plane (of which she has *very* fond memories). Here’s a link to the pics:

Steve: For your jerky, try 50/50 whisky (Makers Mark for me) and soy sauce, with some garlic. Marinate your flank steak strips in that for 30 minutes

That sounds like a great marinade even if grilling and not in a smoker.

The driver for people going to Just-in-Time inventory originally was the cost of money. When interest rates were double digit, having capital tied up in slow moving inventory was a poor business decision.
When capital is cheaper, like it is now, flexibility and shortened lead time can be more valuable than the inventory. But companies still measure and control inventory tightly.
I worked at a company where the typical lead time from order in the market was 34 weeks. We decided that by carrying raw material inventory, we could fulfill orders in 12 weeks. Our company grew much faster than our competitors largely due to our advantage.
My current company buys globally and sells globally. Our supply chain is quite long so we have to carry inventory.

Bill, operating from deep beneath an “Agricultural Research” facility in southern Nevada. You know this diagram is just off screen to his right. Remember, keep that key with you at all times. Scott, check the bell on your teletype. Steve, carry on with the protective beverages.

So 5 pounds of Flank steak yields ?? jerky?
Also fairly nice cut to make into jerky. Most folks I know use London Broil. About 1/2 the cost.

I tried London Broil, specifically because of the cost of flank. But in terms of texture and flavor, I just couldn’t get it to match what I used to buy from The Smokehouse. The good news is, Sam’s has great prices on flank, assuming you can find it during a crisis!

I just can’t stand going to Sam’s Club. As empty nesters we just don’t need that much of anything, except wine. And the 20% off a case that happens each month at Kroger works fine for that.

Get a vacuum sealer. You can either cut the raw stuff up into serving sizes, seal & toss in the freezer. Or for something like brisket, cook then seal. Seriously. Best kitchen toy I ever bought. Saved me a ton of monies.

On my third try, yesterday I was able to get my brisket to smoke perfectly. Now I have more than enough brisket to last me the duration.
