The UK medical system has been two-tiered from the start. One system for those who can afford it, another system for everyone else. And that’s pretty much true for every country with socialized medicine. However, all of their systems have the safety valve of the medical system of the US being available to those who can afford it.
I wish we could blow up both Obamacare and the employer-based insurance model (whose origins date to federal interference in wages) at the same time. I’m not a fan of governmental interference, but if we outlawed employer-based “health insurance” (i.e., prepaid services) tomorrow so that portable, non-governmental-“exchange”-based consumer-driven and genuine insurance (like auto or fire) could emerge, what an amazing system we would have.
But that’s fantasy, and I’m preaching to the choir.
