I have never watched Star Trek before, I was always a Star Wars fan, and I had dabbled in the Stargate series. I just started watching Star Trek the first season and it is really cool! I love Captain Kirk and Mr.Spock, they haven’t done the live long and prosper thing yet, but so far my favorite episode is when they fight against the Romulans that were using a stealth ship to destroy earth asteroid stations, very good episode! Watching a bunch of other shows as well like The Expanse (which I like very much) and anime (specifically Black Clover/Attack on Titan) but I will finish the first season of Star Trek soon! 😉

What, are you from another country?! I watched Star Trek and Star Wars from the get-go, when they first aired, and have seen them all (except ST Voyager and the newest ST garbage). Make sure to watch ST Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation, and Enterprise, they’re gold.
As for “The Expanse,” you’re correct, it is very good. Can’t wait ’til we somehow get off this rock and get to Mars so we can begin terraforming and shooting other ships with nukes! Come on Elon Musk!
Star Trek: The original series was pretty good if you ignore the overacting of William Shatner. So many solid characters.
Star Trek TNG: Started off a big wobbly, but caught its stride around Season 3. Lots of character building. Lots of powerful episodes with a few bombs. My favorite series!
Star Trek DS9: A wide range of characters. Whole new world not on a star ship. Took a little getting used to (for me) from TNG. Funny, sad, action, interplay, and a kickass captain! Some characters from TNG stopped by or stayed on. My 2nd fav ST series.
Star Trek Voyager: I gave it my best shot, but Janeway’s voice grated on my nerves and the plot just was a bit awkward for me from the start. Gave up after a season or so.
Picard: I was so pumped for this one, but didn’t even recognize ANY of the spark from TNG and the woke just slapped me in the face. Picard had went from a strong, contemplative, sometimes courageous rebel, to a weak, bumbling, old man who allowed every female he encountered to treat him like shite. PASS
All the ST movies: Seemed like every other one was a hit. Watched them all. Nostalgia, action, familiar characters, and purpose. William Shatner’s acting still got on my nerves, but he seemed to get better as the years passed. A little.
I just realized how right Bill was when he said that most Americans want the hero, antagonist, character development, etc. They don’t want the woke crap with weak characters and Mary Sue’s. Yep! 🙂
Star Trek (and the like) might just be what saves us all.
Michelle Nichols was very uneasy as the first black woman in a major role and was scared they’d get rid if her because the fans would object, but she turned out to be one of the best actresses in that show and really open up possibilities for other black women in TV. There was one scene that was very touchy in which she and Kirk kissed which set the media on fire! If I remember correctly they were under some kind of spell or something.
Personally, I like “The Trouble with Tribbles.”
Scotty: “I beamed them aboard the Klingon ship, where they’ll be no Tribble at all” Favorite line of Star Trek TOS.
Yeah, the tribble episode that and the revisit of that in DS9 🙂 I even have a “meking of” book on the latter somewhere on my shelves.
Catching up with Trek? Well, you have some work ahead, after the 3 TOS seasons you have 7 of TNG, DS9 and VOY each, then 4 ENT, 2 TAS. And a dozen movies. Just ignore the recent stuff complately, that is anti-trek.
Yeah – the Jar Jar Abrams Star Trek movies are decent enough – the third one definitely showed some progress in terms of feeling more like the original Star Trek – and though things were different, I got the sense they were trying on some level to respect the original source material and bring on new fans.
But Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard – HARD PASS. The worst, wokest, most PAINFULLY cringe SJW bullshit. And basically they not only threw out canon, but stomped all over it, set it on fire and urinated on the charred remains.
Star Trek Discovery has a most unfortunate – yet entirely DESERVED – acronym.
STD – and boy does current Trek have a BAD CASE of it!
The current Trek is The Orville. Above forgot to mention that after you’re done remember to watch Galaxy Quest.
And if you want a better SF series watch Babylon 5.
Damn! You stole my idea. Babylon 5 is superb.
One of the most interesting things about the first season of Star Trek (original 1966 Trek) is how much worldbuilding was done in those episodes – and how much was not yet figured out or set in stone even by the midpoint of the season. If I recall correctly, the Federation itself wasn’t even mentioned until halfway through first season – maybe even the first 2/3!
You can actually tell – if you’re paying attention – to how much they were “winging it” and testing new stuff. There’s even a couple of notable dead ends and stuff that was retconned later.
It’s worth noting that the transporter is what happens when you have to get creative and you have budget problems. To wit – They start with the transporter LONG before they ever show you a shuttlecraft or the hanger. Because they didn’t have it worked out yet what a shuttlecraft would look like – plus they had to give consideration to how the set props – both interior and exterior – of the shuttle, could be constructed and what with in order to be under budget. Originally the shuttle was supposed to be far more aerodynamic looking. But the only way they could do that under budget would be to make it TINY and only 1-2 man on set. (Kind of like the Viper Fighters from Battlestar Galactica) But they needed the shuttle to fit up to a full size landing party of 6 or so. Ultimately the old “box with warp nacelles” was made because you could make it easily as a life size prop AND make the interior semi-consistent with the outside and the model for miniature shots would be easy and cheap to make as well. Relatively speaking.
Much of the Spock stuff happens either near the end of First Season – or across second season. Notably the episode “Amok Time” does a LOT to flesh out Vulcan.
I like to joke – when people ask my age – that –
“I am EXACTLY as old as the Star Trek franchise, you do the math!” 😀
Good for you, and thumbs up! I started out on Star Trek first as I was born in the early ’50s.
I remember a CBS TV series called “Men in Space” that was in black&white and showed the realities and dangers of living on the moon. In one episode a shuttle had crashed miles from the base station so 3 men had to walk to the station. They had plenty of oxygen with them but only one of the men had a wrench to change the tanks and it was inside his suit! In the end, he opened his suit so the others could live.
I remember that show. LoL, we’re giving away our age. I remember the pilot for not only Star Trek, but “Lost in Space” too! “Warning, Warning Will Robinson!”
