We can sum up the failings of many of the liberal lawmaking attempts as “attempting to legislate morality”. I simply thought it was worth mentioning because this can never work.
History shows it, quite clearly. Make any commodity illegal and you instantly create a black market for it. This happened in prohibition, but that is hardly the only example. In any place where guns are now outlawed, you can find a black market for guns. In any place where drugs are outlawed you will find a black market for the outlawed drugs. It is a simple part of human psychology to want what you cannot have. By outlawing commodities, you can increase the demand.
So, let’s take a look at some examples of what liberals want to outlaw.
1) Guns
2) Fossil fuels
3) Freedom in education
4) Freedom of speech
5) Non-electric vehicles
6) Anti-abortion efforts
The list can go on. In each case, they are attempting to legislate morality. This can be because they are trying to legislate their own morality for everyone. It can also be because it simply gives them more power in the guise of morality.
In order for morality to work, it MUST come from God. It has no power coming from any political office. Morality works because it is in your heart. It does not work if it is just in your head.
One of my favorite books, written by Terry Goodkind, is called, “The Wizard’s First Rule”. To paraphrase the first book, the wizard’s first rule is this: people are stupid. The full first rule says, “People are stupid. You can get anyone to believe anything you want them to believe as long as one of two things is true, they either want it to be true, or are afraid it might be true”. Another aspect of this rule is that people can make themselves believe in the morality of an action… simply because they want to believe it is true. This is where the mind fails where morality is concerned.
Only God can convict a person’s heart. That is why morality must come from God, and be based in the heart. It leaves no opportunity for our mind to get in the way. Having said that, some people can still overrule their heart. The Bible refers to these people has having a hardened heart. Luckily, this is not the case for most people. The Bible also says that the law is written on our hearts. We know right from wrong, even when we might wish it to be otherwise temporarily.
That same book series, “The Sword of Truth” (The Wizard’s First Rule is book 1), points out that we must face reality working from a basis of truth. Liberals seem to prefer to work from a foundation of wishes, good intentions, and unworkable dreams. This is why conservatives, trying to operate from a foundation of truth, ask questions like, “Who’s going to pay for that?”. It also explains why liberals despise that question so much… it shines a light on their lack of foundation for their “reality”.
If we can, as a society, ever come to the point of realizing that legislating morality shouldn’t even be attempted, as it will never work, how different would our laws look? Laws against things like murder are intended to punish the act, not to legislate morality. Murder is commonly understood to be a bad thing. What someone decides to put into their body should be their choice. This is why I have a problem with anti-drug laws. I don’t do drugs. That is because I believe it to be harmful. People should have the right to make that decision, and face the consequences of that decision.
It makes me wonder… if part of the reason we have such a wussified generation… is because they are no longer exposed to as many of the consequences for their bad decisions…
Let the conversation begin 🙂
One reply on “The attempt to legislate morality”
It is their morality they are attempting to legislate. We’ve legislated morality since the beginning, but it was based upon the Ten Commandments, (thou shalt not murder, thou shalt not steal, etc.).
We’re in the state we’re in because we’ve allowed God to be kicked out of everything. Our schools, government, town squares… We also have a plethora of priests and preachers that are so afraid of losing their 501c-3 status that they serve up milk toast sermons in their churches. The number of churches that accepted Covid relief funds and kept their doors closed are too many to count. And that’s precisely how Hitler took over the churches in Germany.
The Marxists started taking over our schools in the 50s, so if we want to turn that back, it will be a long time before we see effective and long-lasting results. It’s best to not send children to public schools anymore – at least as long as we still have a choice about it.
We also allowed the government to take over the role of the church. Instead of people turning to their local churches for assistance, they hold their hand out to the government. The politicians are not stupid, and the leftist ideology is their new religion.
I think the bigger question is, as a society do we have the desire and stamina to do what is necessary to fight and restore? Are we willing to sacrifice comfort in order to do so? Unfortunately, our society’s attention span lasts as long as the next election – if that long. Once [perceived] comfort returns, society will sit back again.
