The communists took over the Syria Democratic forces. .

Several people have been reporting that after defeating the ISIS caliphate the Communist PKK switched to attacking all the non communist members of the coalition. The Syrian Democratic Forces, that the USA allied to, has shattered and factionalized with some going home to Kurdistan proper, others joining the Turkish allied forces, etc. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK are communist moslems.  A very big problem for Christians. 

This is what Trump is responding to. The people we supported in the SDF are now thrown out of the SDF or fled with some assassinated. He does not trust the Turkish ‘would be caliphate’ but he is willing to use them to deal with the communists. Trump only pulled out 50 people in an obsolete border mission. Blocking Turks that were supplying ISIS forces.
Trump has not pulled the plug on Kurdistan itself.

At the same time he is testing the Turks self control. There are still US, British and other commando units in the area. The Turks reportedly know where they are, de-confliction information, yet they have already been fired on in one case. No casualties. Trump can not expend US lives protecting communists but has drawn a line at Kurdish civilians. That will be what the commando’s there will do. 

This looks a lot like a test and the Turks failed. Some Turkish islamist hardliners in the AK party would love to take on the USA. They have the same belief’s as ISIS had but are more subtle. 

We need to both get rid of the communists and to get the world to look again at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and AK. That seems to be happening, as the UN and NATO are calling meetings already.

The Kurds also need to sort out the PKK communists and a few others in their midst. By pulling people out but not the commandos working with the non communists he has forced Kurdistasn to face the problem of their powerful communist faction. The PKK is already a recognised terrorist organisation under US law.

This also forces Congress to sit down and work out their position that in the past has been ambiguous.

It does now look like this was planned well in advanced with units on the ground ready for it.

There are indication that the Pentagon itself is divided on what to do with or about the PKK they are good fighters but communists and in some cases shia Islamists.

I think the Turks are being baited into a trap both political and military but that the key objective is to break both the AK and PKK leaving the others free to organise a more democratic out come at the diplomatic table.
