New York mayor Bill DeBlasio has ORDERED churches to close, threatening congregations with arrest and potential PERMANENT CLOSURE. As if he has that power.

What never seemed to come up during the Pulse shooting was “if your church is really a military base and your dad is the Captain issuing instructions to go murder people, and you do we will close your church permanently.” Personally I would say bulldoze it and put in a Rite Aid, but shockingly the subject never came up.
I have said it on other sites: This debacle is going to show who has the inner despot in them just waiting to come out…..and who doesn’t….
I continue to post on many sites that the only person who can declare Martial Law is the President….no governors have that authority…and there are clear guidelines for what Martial Law entails….available through the search engine of your choice…Governors can only issue Health and Public Safety Emergency measures….re DeBlasio’s announcement, what he is advocating is the old Soviet and Nazi turning in your neighbors and family business…
I have been reading some of my town’s old newspapers. Yellow fever would make its way through each year. In one of the October issues of 1897 they spoke about which towns which were under quarantine, citizens who had left town for funerals and were not going to be allowed back in until the quarantine was lifted, numbers of cases and number of deaths, wishing for more news from the riverboats and the economic costs (it was costing New Orleans $1,000 per day,Vicksburg $12,000 per month!) but is was presented in such a matter-of-fact way. Nothing like the mass hysteria today. But it was deadly and they knew it up-close and personal and prayed for an early frost.
Bill, I’m glad to see you’re starting to see the light. But, if you want to understand how the vast majority of churches lost their First Amendment protections, read the book “In Caesar’s Grip.” It started back in the 19th century, so no one should be surprised. The Black Regiment is now a cuckhold of constituents indoctrinated to “submit to governing authorities.”
PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT: Gov. Hogan issued a Stay-at-Home Order, effective at 8 pm tonight. No Marylander should leave their home unless it is for an essential reason. Gatherings are limited to 10 or fewer. Grocery stores and essential services remain open. We are counting on you to help us stop the virus. More: https://coronavirus dot Maryland dot gov.
Marshall law is effectively here because people will disobey the order and neighbor will turn against neighbor justifying coercive action.
Biology beats liberty every time. De Blasio is dealing with a hand full religious entities that do not believe in the germ theory of disease and / or believe the virus is a hoax. These are serving as the epicenters in each country. In New York state it’s a Synagogue. In south korea its a cult church. In Iran, Australia and israel it is mosques. In London it both a mosque, a synagogue and a church. It will be the Mormon Temple next month they are planning a huge gathering. It’s at the religious service that you turn one case into 50 to 100.
All legitimate churches have already gone online including the entire catholic church in most countries.
Christians know what quarantine means, the word itself comes from leviticus 13. Quarantine has been tested versus the First Amendment and quarantine won. It’s why we all know the name Typhoid Mary. Her case triggered questions in law and congress that were all answered in favor of quarantine, life long in her case.
If you are a walking weapon of mass destruction you are not “…peacefully assembling…”. Worldwide Conservative governments and Republican governors are closing religious venues. It’s just not making the news because they are doing it quietly and politely. As they say “your liberty stops at my nose.”
Religious liberty is not absolute where human life is concerned.

Quarantine and constitution.

It has never got to the supreme court because no one that challenged it continued to that level. There were a few related court cases recorded on wikipedia a few years ago. Someone deleted them.

Its clearly obsolite realative to aircraft.
Absolutely anything can be sensationalized and used as a “health and safety emergency”. Imagine if we ever have another world war or a black death like plague what kind of government control we will just sheepishly put up with.
He who is free NEVER submits. He who submits was NEVER free. Stay FREE!
Churches threatened with closure. Well the New Zealand government just banned regional newspapers and national magazines…

My church, a fairly large congregation in San Diego, intended to remain open as long as possible, but at every step, followed the requests of the state and county. Limiting main services to no more than 200 with maximum distancing, then limiting to 50 (we fortunately have plenty of school rooms where remote viewing in groups of 25 were easy to set up), and finally requesting that services be held on livestream as much as possible. (I’ve been busy running around to folks’ homes to set them up with whatever computer equipment they do have to connect to their TVs for ease of family viewing)
But a threat to “permanently” close a church is beyond the pale. I will, if necessary, go to war to defend America’s churches from tyrants.
Thank you, Bill, for describing the situation, and de Blasio himself, perfectly.
My church in Washington has gone to live streaming the service, which I was not happy about at first, but I am tolerating it. The Bible says to submit to governing authorities, and we weren’t ordered to stop service, we chose to based on a recommendation for the health of the rest of the public, so I’m okay with it.
If we were order shut down, though, I’d start going to church again over the online services just to defy this order. I don’t care if I’m the only one who shows up, I don’t care if I get thrown in jail, I don’t care if I get killed. No one will stop me from going to church by force if I have ANYTHING to say about it.
That said, I wouldn’t go to war for this. In the face of persecution specifically for our faith, we should not retaliate in anger, but respond with love. It is such an opportunity to testify with our actions. “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.” – Proverbs 25:21-22
I was extraordinarily disappointed a couple of weeks ago when my Archbishop (not in NYC) cancelled public masses until further notice. I could write a little rant about all the philosophical (and theological) reasons why I think this is a terrible idea. (And note, please, that I say this as someone who is at risk and who likely contracted CV19 the last time I went to church.) But my Archbishop has the authority (to which I willingly submit) to so order. City, county, state, and federal officials do not. This was a bright line until De Blasio’s order. And it is definitely a hill worth dying on.
I remember reading something about people with guns busting up a church service in New Jersey a week or so ago. Did that turn out to be not true? If it was true, where is the outrage?
I am sure that when this is all over, some public-interest organization will sue and will win. But what good does that do people now?
I’m right there with you. Canceling church services out of fear, either of the virus or of the authorities, betrays everything we claim to believe as Christians. I’ve already been through the entire rant in my head as well.
Is he closing down any mosques? If not, does that mean that he doesn’t care if Muslims get COVID-19? If there is a double standard on this, the citizens New York City need to wrap it around the Mayor’s neck.
I feel the same way Bill, born in Brooklyn , have lived a few miles east NYC for 40 + years , always considered Manhattan another planet. Ignorant Commie leftist like Di Blasio know nothing about the Constitution. I’m pretty sure he, and everyone who surrounds him , would be surprised to find out people are outraged at such an order.
And here it goes. Complete abrogation of the first part of the first admendment. Knew it was coming evemtually. Just thought it would be in California not New York. Even if they were maintaining social separation? He did not have that exception. Sic semper tyrranus.
