It is so regrettable that the country is missing out on this amazing achievement. And the superb speech that President Trump made at the launch site. When I look back at the universal excitement of the Moon Landing and compare it to the present lack of reaction, it breaks my heart. And just when the nation needs good news and positive accomplishments.

There are a number of quotes attributed to Tom Edison regarding failure…I think this one comes closest to the topic…”Each time you fail, you have eliminated another wrong option”.

My father worked for JPL, from 1962 thru 1993. His specialty as a senior research engineer was to develop an instument that can measure magnetic fields. This he did with the Victor Helium Magnetometer, and was used on a number of exploratory spacecraft such as pioneer and many others to measure the magnetic fields of planets. In addition, he developed navigation systems for combat tanks that had previously required the tank commander to exit the tank to take measurments, as the steel around the tank would otherwise give a false reading. I remember him staying up late at night, doing his calculations. This was before computers that would do much of it for you, so it was time consuming. I miss my pops, he left us in 2006, and I miss this brilliant man who contributed so much.

A manager pulls up the tomato plants to see if the roots are growing. The pulled up plant can no longer thrive.
A leader tends the soil, applies fertilizer carefully, makes sure the plants have adequate sunlight and water. Then steps back to allow the tomato plants to grow. He intervenes only if predators attack the growing plants. He does so to allow the plants to continue to grow.
Which one gets the most abundant harvest?
Ditto for people!
Managers can only accomplish the same old same old and not that well. They work to avoid failure. By doing so they also fail to succeed.
Leaders create things that have never existed. Yes, they can sometimes fail but when they succeed, the success is spectacular. This largely is due to learning from the failures and using that learning for the next attempt.
Who needs managers? I don’t!
