Bill, I think the Meiji Revolution in Japan actually comes close to qualifying some of the same characteristics you mention, as well.

Both of your insights about the Declaration we commemorate are excellent. My dictionary’s definition of the word rebellion reinforce both. From the Oxford Dictionary of English, the second meaning is: “the action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention” which speaks to Mr. Rachel’s point – the founders weren’t resisting the ultimate authority, control, and convention, King George, his ministers, and Parliament were. The document itself is proof of the founders’ respect for authority and convention, the civility of the mode of separation to which Mr. Whittle refers.

Great episode, guys! It is so good to hear you put it all in the perspective of God’s leadership and provision in the founding and His moral principles in the doing of it. Knowledge of that is so lacking today as people “do what is right in their own eyes.” That did not ever work out well for the people in the book of Judges, and nothing has changed. Thanks for calling attention back to Him and His purpose for this nation. That calls us to what we must strive for again now and in the future–living by and defending the true meaning of rights and liberty. (And I especially was impressed by your explanation of “rebellion,’ Zo. So true!)
