You Were Right: To Those Who See Scott Ott and Think ‘S.O.B.’

Scott Ott at The Brewery with S.O.B. circa 1983

So why is a person like Scott Ott, who grew up with his grandparents listening to Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey and the Andrews sisters, starting a band in State College?

“I can’t imagine myself behind a desk in a real nine to five job. I think I’m a stand-up comic at heart without the guts to do that, but what I do up on stage comes very spontaneously.”

Ott’s stage presence does a lot for the act too.

Just stumbled upon this old story from the Penn State Daily Collegian about the band I fronted in 1982-83. Dug up some fuzzy old pictures too from gigs at The Brewery in State College, PA, and at an outdoor festival on the lawn of the Hetzel Union Building (nice sunburn!).

The Daily Collegian story has some risible lines, like this…

If the members of the Scott Ott Band, or SOB from herein, got together to just listen to some music, “it would probably be best if we had four Walkmans” says Scott Ott.

Last I heard, Bob Churchill, our guitar player, was managing a retail operation. Drummer Eric DeZubay was the veteran meteorologist of the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have no idea what happened to Chris Pilione — but then bass players never die, they just don’t show up for practice one day.

Hope you enjoy the flashback, and perhaps use the Member blog to post some of your own.

Rock on little brother! Thanks for sharing. Closest I got to live music was I worked on the road crew for a band for a year or so in the late 80’s.

C’mon, Scott, share some mp3s of your songs.

I know you got ’em. No, really, I know. 😀

Eric is a great guy, with an even greater heart. I had asked him to make a video for my class explaining how meteorologists use the green screen on TV, and he took the time to do that.

Outing yourself! ;D

I’m slowly putting together a little post about my own history with NASA, as inspired by what Bill shared in “What We Saw”.
