Why now?

I have been wondering, why have we reacted this way to Covid-19?  We didn’t react this way for H1N1, SARS, or any other potential pandemics we’ve been told were going to kill us all.

The cynic in me wants to say that it’s Trump Derangement Syndrome.  They let Obama off easy.  But I don’t really think that’s it because Dems never let a crisis go to waste and would have been thrilled to shut down our economy to the point of forcing a Marxist revolution if they’d had a chance when they had an incumbent in the White House who was raised by feral Marxists (I love that line of yourse, Bill).  Witness Pelosi’s ridiculous stunt holding up the relief package.  (Either the Dems aren’t taking it seriously, or they are trying to destroy the economy so that they can then execute their power grab of wish-list socialist policies.)

The romantic conspiracy theorist in me wants to say that They Know where this virus really came from–see the blogs/vlogs harvardtothebighouse or JC on a Bike–namely labs, and so They reacted as if this were a movie about a pandemic.

I don’t really like either of those two ideas, and yet it really seems to me that, absent some significant hidden data, the reaction of shutting everything down for weeks just doesn’t make a lot of sense.  Even granting that it is a highly infectious virus, all the calculations of potential death tolls don’t take into account basic seasonal flu experience like herd immunity (which our self-quarantining is slowing down).

So I’m wondering, why did this–our reaction to a potential pandemic–happen now, to this virus?

Pigeons in MAGA hats!

A protest group released a flock of pigeons in Las Vegas before the Democrat debate yesterday.  They were all wearing tiny MAGA hats, except for one wearing an orange toupee.

(I looked for a better video, but mostly they were all “news” stories that quoted people saying it was dumb or it was harmful to the birds.)

The Master at Work

Bill has talked about how good President Trump is at taking questions from the press right before he gets on board Marine 1.  This 7-minute clip from this morning demonstrates his absolute mastery of the genre.  He makes them scream above the helicopter noise, he doesn’t fall for their trap questions, he doubles down on his “Victory Lap” speech from yesterday (another must-watch) where he called out the Democrats in sometimes colorful language (demonstrating how much restraint he has exercised until now), and touting more good economic news, another win against the Democrats in the House, and on and on.  This is really great stuff, enjoy!

Post your favorite SOTU moment

I would love to hear what and why were my fellow members’s favorite or most significant moments from the SOTU.   For me, it was definitely Rush.  Not sure how they managed to keep it a surprise because it was reported in the media beforehand.  But wow.  The look on his face will stay with me […]

Cruz and Knowles

Really enjoying Ted Cruz’s new “Verdict” podcast with Michael Knowles.  In case you missed it, every night after the impeachment trial in the Senate, Cruz and Knowles sit down and talk about it for half an hour.  The only things missing so far are alcohol and cigars.  In Episode 5, Cruz talks about how he hopes that the President’s lawyers will present a story instead of just going through the Democrats’ case point by point and rebutting, which is a bad trial strategy.  Anyway, you can find the podcast on youtube and on all the usual podcast providers.

In re: Boaty McBoatface

Apropos of Bill’s recent mention of the vessel Boaty McBoatface, I commend to the attention of my fellow deplorables the article at Wikipedia.  (The article is named something else that “Boaty McBoatface” redirects to.)  It includes not only a history of the vessel and its naming contest, but some subsequent naming contests and their winners.   […]

Escape from Hurricane Harvey

This is a journal entry I wrote about a week after Hurricane Harvey flooded our home on August 29, 2017, describing our evacuation odyssey.     Monday, August 28, 2017, we spent the day trying to get things to safer places, Just in Case. Put some furniture up on blocks, moved genealogical things to the tops […]

Supremes get it right again

According to SCOTUSblog, the Supreme Court just handed down a win (my interpretation) yesterday.  It is about the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment.    Without getting into the weeds of the legal arguments, this case is a win on four issues beyond the actual case:  (1) people can now sue governments for unconstitutional takings […]

Boycotting the Georgia & Alabama Boycotters

Looking for a list that names names of people and companies actually boycotting Georgia and/or Alabama (or Missouri, or any other state) over pro-lfe legislation.  I understand that Georgia is receiving a lot of attention because it has a significant amount of filming on location there.   Some, like Netflix, are claiming that they will “re-evaluate” […]

Tour of Duty at Arlington

For Memorial Day, I particularly enjoyed this article by Sen. Cotton about his time serving at Arlington National Cemetery.   https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/sacred-duty-soldiers-tour-arlington-national-cemetery/ (Sorry I didn’t manage to get this posted yesterday.)

Supremes get it right

Report from the Federalist Society:     “On May 20, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling in the case of Herrera v. Wyoming. In Herrera, the Court encountered the question of whether a portion of an 1868 treaty between the Crow, a Native American tribe which today resides on Montana reservation land, and the […]

Texan round-up

There’s an old saw that advises:  “Never ask anyone where he’s from.  If he’s from Texas, he’ll tell you;  if he’s not, don’t embarrass him.”   I’m a native Texan with deep roots here, and I know that there are a lot of other Texans, both native and of the “came here as fast I could” […]
