Discworld

Any Discworld readers here?

Discworld, a great disc riding on the back of the Great A’tuin, the only planet where an elephant occasionally has to lift a leg to let the sun go past.

It’s a humorous, sometimes parodic, fantasy world with an assortment of gods, witches, wizards, trolls, vampires, elves, dwarves and of course Death himself. There are repeating characters and groups of characters frequently are the focus of several novels, but they can pretty much be read as stand-alone novels.  The characters get more fleshed-out over time but they don’t have grand story arcs that you have to read several novels to complete.

Pratchett hits his stride with about the third novel in the series, Wyrd Sisters I think, and then the tone is pretty consistent. There are a few where I think he let his social commentary message override the story but for the most part they’re good fun.

Oh heck yeah! I came to Discworld late. Sir Terry passed about the time I finished Going Postal, so I have limited myself to one a year. This summer I get to read Making Money! I cant wait!! Downside: only 5 left after that.

I can’t say how much I miss Terry Pratchett (or rather, Sir Terry, he got his K in 2009). He was a wonderful writer and a delightfully spiky, humorous and humane man. His books are not only very funny, they hold up a mirror to our own world, often with distinct libertarian slant.

For any Pratchett fans who’ve not seen it, here’s Back in Black, a tribumentary broadcast in 2017. A word of warning, it’s very moving for anyone who knows his work and thought well of him, bring your tissues.
