Memories of band camp.

On the right angle backstage of 6-24-202, Steve Green mentioned going to bed hearing Taps. For 2 years I went to band camp literally across the road from Fort Knox, and hearing the cannon going off at 6 am. (And we were already in our way to practice marching) First year I yelled out “Hit it!” when we should hit the line marker, mainly because I was reliable and loud. I played trumpet. The next year I had the honor of getting up even earlier, as I went into the office and playing Revillie over the camp speakers to wake every one else. I also played Taps at the end of the day. We did complicated music and marching, doing marching with a step that lifted our legs so that our ankle was even with our knee. We stood at attention, right face, about face, etc. Had to even tell out our instruments serial number when asked (still remember it – E95814. Sometimes had to yell it backwards). Never served in the military (long story) but it almost seemed like it to me. In fact, a friend who did serve said it was a good prep for the military. Good memories.

You know this one time? At band camp?…
Band helped me accomplish a lot of growing up. The hours of practice, the camaraderie, almost like a family. Then in later years, the responsibilities of section leader, drum major, or band officer teaching us adult life lessons. In college, passing classes while STILL using free time for practice, game days, or travel. Emphasis on passing all your classes. Band nerds rulz!
