Stranger Danger: Facebook Messenger Kids Security Hole Exposes Your Child

The Verge reports a security hole in Facebook’s allegedly kid-friendly, parent-approved, Messenger Kids app that let’s your child join a group chat with people you don’t know, and have not approved, exposing him to untold stranger danger. This is the latest breach of trust between the social media giant — that also owns Instagram and Whatsapp — and the users whose personal information it monetizes for billions of dollars each year. Proper privacy and security measures harm Facebook’s bottom-line, so how long will people continue to trust them?

Away from the toxic sewer of social media, in a Members-only conservative enclave, liberty lovers have created a forum to discuss time-tested principles as they clash with the news of the day. They were so close to the heart of the problem for/of the parents. I was surprised they did not go there.
The breakdown of the family unit and the parents generation slipping farther away for good example and consistent / fair treatment & training and loving of their children.

I don’t remember if any casino was ever taken to task, either by law or in court, for the addictive nature of the lights, sounds and environment of the gambling areas. If so, that could be a way to get around the Section 230 blocks they have up and cut into their data collection desires. A VAT on targeted ads probably wouldn’t work well as the enforcement and tracking would be very difficult but it could make for an effective stalking horse to propose.

Bill’s blockchain web site sounds a heck of a lot like all of the personal blogs that Facebook has eaten. The major question is how does the whole thing make money? Ads, but without data collection and targeting? Monthly subscription? Something like that is certainly possible today but facing the head winds of the network effect of everyone already being on Facebook. Possibly as people quit and leave, someone new could entice them into an alternative by convincing them that the time spend on social media isn’t wasted time.

Absolutely one of the best R/As! And they’re all pretty good, actually! “When your theories bump up against reality, sometimes you have to adapt your theories.YES! That’s an adult fact of life!

Please let me come and work for you, Bill Whittle. I don’t believe in minimum wage, but I believe in being able to work and live in the US. I am INCREDIBLE pain and isolation in this commie hellhole, Bill. I probably won’t be able to take it much longer soon, at which point I may just as well go kamikaze on them commies.

Not sure if this is related to Scott’s joke about Disney or his DJ story…

Way back in the before times when I was freelancing, I was working a gig at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. On Spring St. Downtown. Some, apparently big deal, dance school had rented out the place for their year end performance. Now I’m up in the booth watching this show as we ran through a dress rehearsal. Anyone here familiar w/ the dance numbers in say the movie Showgirls. Or really any Vegas nudie review. Well that’s the show this dance school was putting on. No actually nudity but very skimpy outfits and graphic sexual moves.

And here’s the kicker. There were three classes performing. The 16-17yr olds. The 13-15yr olds. And the 8-12yr olds. The director/choerographer of the school was an older woman. And all the parents showed up and seemed quite happy w/ the show…

Now I’m no prude. And especially back then in my 20s, I was completely on board w/ young women in very skimpy outfits being graphically sexual. But I was sitting through this thing thinking “this is so wrong.”

FG – I was at my daughter’s first dance competition (she was in 6th grade) and I leaned over to another dad who was there also at his first and commented; well at least they can get jobs as strippers to support themselves. That being what it seemed they were being trained to do.
The previous year when she was in 5th grade, I happened to be a the studio when they were choosing costumes for a dance. There was another dad there with me. The teacher held up the two pieces we looked at our girls (his was in 4th grade) looked at the teacher and both said no. She looked at us like we were nuts. In my best NY’er voice, I told her that I was the customer and was paying for the outfit and that wasn’t it.
Parents need to speak up. These aren’t 25 year olds on DWTS. They are our kids.

Steve – many of my daughter’s friends were getting cell phones and smart phones as early as elementary school. We explained that she had no need for a cell phone until she was doing activities which necessitated her contacting my wife or I with a change in plans. Now go outside and play with the other kids in the neighborhood.
When she started high school and had after school activities she got a flip phone.

Also, the computer in our house was located in the kitchen. We all used the same PC so don’t go anywhere you shouldn’t.
Avoid it for your kids as long as possible. There is really nothing they need.
