Having graduated high school in 1975, I was I the process of joining the U.S. Navy at the time. As I recall, “Convoy,” the theme from S.W.A.T, “The Hustle,” and “Love Will Keep Us Together” by the Captain & Tennille were constantly on the radio. It was the days of no cell phones, no VCRs, 8-tracks were not yet there, and home computers were Star Trek dream machine stuff. The world had fallen apart in the late sixties, where everything, and I mean everything, you’d been taught to believe in was suddenly in question. Between the hippies, the civil rights riots, the Vietnam War, and the changing morals of the youth, it was a time of much unrest and yeah, it sucked. Then the oil crisis hit, where you were allowed gas on alternate days based on what letter your license plate started with. On TV, the early 70s were the time of the Kung Fu, the last years of Gunsmoke and the middle years of Hawaii Five-O, the start of many detective and police shows (Charlie’s Angels, Mannix, Barnaby Jones, McCloud, Baretta, etc.). Phones were mostly still rotary phones. Seatbelts were new. By 1975, we were in poor straights on the national level, but…people generally had more sense than now, a better work ethic and better moral values that kept everyone generally acting decent toward each other. Without 24/7 media and social media to make everyone hate each other. Even Democrats and Republicans generally got along in public, and no matter which party you were in (except maybe the Leftist hippies) you loved America. But I do remember that period as a rather great time for American music. Thanks for the flashback on Memory Lane, Bill!

Finally managed to watch this and I sure wish I’d made it to the live show! OMG this has turned me into a fangirl speaking Valley!

Some responses, in no particular order:

1. “Oppress them! Oppress them! Make them relinquish the ball!” (I wonder if they’re still allowed to use the word “oppress.”)

2. I can sing the flower song from Lakme for you, or rather, I could if I could sing two voices at once, anyone else out there up for it? I can do either voice.

3. I want to go to Yellowstone with Natasha.

4. I have only ever been tempted to go on a cruise twice. Once was a genealogy cruise (actually happened every year so I suppose I wanted to go several times). Second time was I think a Federalist Society cruise with, among others, Charles Krauthammer. I would have loved meeting him. And now, the Billigin’s Island Express. I so want to do this. Many obstacles to overcome to manage it (both health and finances), but WOW, I have never wanted to take a cruise this badly before. And not just to meet Bill and Natasha (and Scott and Mrs. Scott), but all the rest of you.

I love Tom Lehrer; I got hooked on him when I first heard “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park.” You would probably get a kick out of his song “Werner von Braun.”

Bill, what you are experiencing is the anti-climax, the let-down after some supreme effort. This is normal, you should recognize it and strive to live thru it, learn from it something about yourself. Peaks and valleys in emotions…

I always imagined that the high-pitched, effeminate backup singers in that song were the 11 long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse micro-bus.
